Resources for Clients
These are some concepts and the organizations from whom I learned about them that I recommend highly:
- High Sensitivity: to find out more about whether you (or someone you know) are one of the 20% of the population who is physiologically wired differently than the rest, why that is a gift, and how to manage it (especially when people around you don’t understand), go to Dr. Elaine Aron’s website, www.hsperson.com. Her acronym DOES (Depth of processing, being prone to Overstimulation, Emotional responsivity/empathy, and sensitivity to Subtleties) is good to keep in mind, whether you are highly sensitive yourself, or live with someone who is.
- Innovation: are you a Builder, or a Pioneer? Conservative, structured, risk-averse, detail-oriented over long periods of time, or unconservative, full of ideas, don’t even see risk as risk, pull from lots of different sources? My colleague Bob Rosenfeld has been studying innovation for many years, and has most recently started working with the Center for Creative Leadership as Innovator in Residence to make his experiences and ideas available more widely. I often use the assessment he developed, the ISPI™, with my clients, to help them better understand themselves and how best to bring their innovative ideas forward.
- Leadership and improvisation: As a dancer, I learned long ago that you can tell a lot about a person by watching the way they dance. I use partner dancing as an experiential metaphor to help clients and workshop participants better understand themselves, how they lead, how they follow, how (and if) they improvise, and where they might go if they want to work on any of these ideas. I call it the Dance of Leadership.
- Finally, you might find it useful to review this Awareness Checklist, and see if any of these resonate with you.
